What is Goytre Community Garden?
Goytre Community Garden is situated in land behind Capel Ed Presbyterian Church. The idea for a community garden was first put forward in June 2014 by a group of people attending Capel Ed. In April 2015, over 20 people from the community with help from Keep Wales Tidy constructed six raised beds on the site. These beds were planted with herbs and vegetables with help from local school children. Since then we have built a composting area and dug a sensory area and two flower borders. We have also developed a seating area with two benches. More recently we have planted eight fruit trees in an orchard area and planted a bank within the grounds of Capel Ed with wild flowers.
Where are we now?
The garden is managed by a committee who meet on a monthly basis. We are now in our second year of the garden and the area looks so much better. It has been massively transformed from an untidy patch of grass to an attractive and productive garden. We could not have done this without the help and support of people in the community who have provided expertise, labour and donations of plants and financial support.
Where are we going?
We have started to develop a children’s area and have constructed a bug hotel and put in a log circle. Future plans include putting in a pond. We also have started to put in mini-plots for people in the community to cultivate. We want to continue to build on and develop the links we have in the community and make the garden an area that everyone can access and enjoy.
